Landon Thomas

Landon Thomas is a journalist who worked for The New York Times. He covered financial and business news.

In 2008, Thomas received detailed confidential information about the federal investigation of Jeffrey Epstein from Assistant U.S. Attorney David Weinstein. According to a May 2008 letter from Epstein’s defense attorneys to Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip, Weinstein spoke with Thomas about the case and revealed:

  • The Government’s allegations against Epstein
  • Federal authorities’ belief that Epstein had lured girls over the telephone
  • Epstein’s alleged travel in interstate commerce for the purpose of engaging in underage sex
  • The U.S. Attorney’s Office’s theory of prosecution
  • Analysis of key federal statutes being considered

Defense attorney Jay Lefkowitz reviewed Thomas’s contemporaneous notes, which contradicted First Assistant Jeffrey Sloman’s claim that only “non-case specific information concerning specific federal statutes” had been provided.

According to the letter, after the defense team complained about the leak, Weinstein contacted Thomas, admonished him for talking to the defense, told him not to believe the “spin” of Epstein’s “high-priced attorneys,” and reminded him that all prior conversations were merely hypothetical.

Landon Thomas appears in the Epstein Files as the recipient of leaked confidential information from federal prosecutors during the 2008 prosecution negotiations.
