Michael Mukasey
Biography
Section titled “Biography”Michael Bernard Mukasey (born July 28, 1941) is an American lawyer and jurist who served as the 81st Attorney General of the United States from 2007 to 2009. Prior to his appointment as Attorney General, he served as a United States District Court judge for the Southern District of New York.
Education
Section titled “Education”Mukasey graduated from Columbia College in 1963 and received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1967.
Federal Judiciary
Section titled “Federal Judiciary”President Ronald Reagan nominated Mukasey to serve as a United States District Court judge for the Southern District of New York in 1987. He served in this capacity until his retirement from the bench in 2006. During his tenure, he presided over several high-profile terrorism cases.
Attorney General
Section titled “Attorney General”President George W. Bush nominated Mukasey as Attorney General following the resignation of Alberto Gonzales. He was confirmed by the Senate in November 2007 and served until January 2009. In his confirmation hearings, Mukasey emphasized his commitment to ensuring fairness and integrity in the administration of justice.
Connection to Epstein Case
Section titled “Connection to Epstein Case”During his tenure as Attorney General in 2008, Mukasey’s Department of Justice was involved in the federal investigation and prosecution negotiations concerning Jeffrey Epstein. Defense attorneys Kenneth Starr and Joe Whitley referenced Mukasey’s commitment to fairness in their May 2008 letter to Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip seeking review of the prosecution.
Michael Mukasey appears in the Epstein Files as the Attorney General during the 2007-2009 period when federal prosecutors were negotiating with Epstein’s defense team.
